Multistar Information

The MULTISTAR DUPLEX CHUCK was my first choice because of some of the following:

A versatile system for the turner who requires the widest possible range of workholding options, from tiny sub lace-bobbin work to deep bowls well over 600mm (24") diameter. Accuracy and durability. Being a true collet chuck wear compensation is an automatic benefit which keeps the chuck functioning year in, year out, without loss of accuracy, or gripping power.

The relative size of the Duplex Chuck at 75mm dia, coupled with its smooth, projection free surfaces, means that workpiece accessibility and safe hand working are without parallel. The Duplex Chuck has built in 24 hole indexing. This useful facility will benefit you in almost any area of turning from simple holding the chuck steady for hole drilling, to advanced decorative work.

Well it does not do this automatically (still learning) but as a beginner to turning the price was right and I have found it easy to work and have added a few of the accessories Multistar produce

Multistar Duplex Chuck Jaw Range

The eight jaw range offers a wide choice of holding options, with approx 6.5mm (1/4") of movement, and full expansion and compression working on all jaws. Jaws are easily changed without screws or tools in less than 60 seconds.

JA01 1/4Ó Mini Jaws These are the smallest jaws in the range and provide unparalleled access and safety where close working on miniature items is unavoidable. The bore is completely plain, with a driving grip on square stock from 3mm (1/8") up to about 9.5mm (3/8"). Ideal for the newer, smaller lace bobbin blanks, including bone at about 6mm (1/4"). Also features expansion working into a 16mm (5/8") hole or dovetail.
JA02 1/2" Mini Jaws Like JA01 these jaws provide stiffness and vibration dampening on small spindle work to help eliminate breakage's, and poor finishes. Two of the main areas of failure in such work. The 12mm (1/2") bore features matching internal dovetails, whilst square holding is ideally matched to take standard 9-10mm (3/8") lace bobbin and pen blanks etc.
JA03 3/4" Mini Jaws These are ideal when the emphasis is on small, rather than micro workpieces, without losing the characteristics of good accessibility and safety. They are no less versatile in tackling a surprisingly wide range of projects in new and better ways. The 19mm (3/4") dovetails and plain bore are complemented with 12mm (1/2") square holding. The expansion dovetails and short parallel are usefully sized at 25mm (1") dia.
JA04 1-1/4" Size Jaws The most popular choice for turners to complement JA08 Jaws, or extend the popular JA09+JA06 or JA10+JA06 jaw combinations. Deceptively versatile, they are capable of holding a wide range of items. e.g.: small bowl blanks and boxes, or awkward lumps of wood in a 32mm (1-1/4") hole. Internal bore and dovetails are 25mm (1") dia. External dovetails and plain parallel are 32mm (1-1/4") dia.
JA06 B Size Jaws Ideally sized for box making, small to medium bowls, plus spindle work, they are an excellent combination set to the larger flanged JA08 : JA09 : JA10 jaws. They offer unimpeded tool access and wood economy on small to medium work. The 38mm (1-1/2") bore and compression dovetails accept all of the matching bore mounted accessories, such as the Variform Screwchuck, Universal & Marlin Carriers, etc. Expansion dovetails are 45mm (1-3/4") dia.
JA08 C Size Jaws These are the smallest of the more powerful flanged jaws, and feature fairly evenly matched compression and expansion dovetails which makes them a good “workhorse” choice for general turning up to about 300mm (12") dia, whilst the plain 38mm (1-1/2") bore copes with smaller spigoted work and bore mounted accessories. Compression Dovetails are 50mm (2") dia. Expansion Dovetails are 60mm (2-3/8") dia.
JA09 D Size Jaw Bigger than JA08    jaws, they are most popular“first choice jaws, allowing larger work to be confidently undertaken. Vis: 600mm (24”") dia bowls - machine and skill allowing. Perhaps the best choice for beginners, as the size does not present a great impediment for shorter goblets, self made cup chucks, and similar work. As with all flanged jaws they have a 38mm (1-1/2") plain bore. Compression dovetails are 62mm (2-1/2") dia. Expansion dovetails are 75mm (3") dia.
JA10 E Size Jaws Ideal workhorse jaws if most of your work is large and you want maximum versatility, because apart from specialist projects such as thin section platters, housing clock mechanisms, etc., they have the added advantage of eight M6 threaded holes for extension plates. Perfect for mirror frames, offset work, large fruit, bangles and rings, etc., in either gripping mode. A jig is available (Ref No. JE10) to simplify plate making. Compression dovetails are 75mm (3") dia. Expansion dovetails are 90mm (3-1/2") dia.
